Right now Portland is gray and rainy, and by the end of the month … well … likely it’ll be the same. But at least it’ll be officially spring — and with some seasonal fun to prove it 🌸
In the meantime, there are a couple of March events you may not want to miss.
- 📽️ Watch the Oscar-nominated short films. You don’t even have to commit to a full feature length film to watch some excellent action, animation, and documentaries. They’re showing around town this week through at least the rest of this week.
- 🍀 Portland has a long tradition of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with the Shamrock Run; register soon if you want to get a spot. Also there’ll also be more traditional festivities with music 🍺 And Eater Portland has a run-down of local Irish food for those who want their bangers and mash all year round.
🦁 Tips for March 🐑
Heads-up, the season is changing:
Enjoy the Winter Snow (in the Mountains) ❄️
- The Cascades just got a healthy pile of snow. Get your snowshoeing, skiing, and snowboarding in before saying goodbye to winter.
- 🪩 Don’t miss the last weekend of cosmic tubing at Ski Bowl for that fun. (Daytime tubing and lifts will remain open longer.)
- 🌨️ And check out the best places to snowshoe. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
Spring is Coming 🌧️💧🌼
- 🌸 Tom McCall Waterfront Park’s cherry blossoms have their spring breakout moment between mid-March and early April. Don’t miss them. (Hat tip: events expert Michele Venlee)
- 🌷 Wooden Shoe Festival begins March 22. Get ready for spring blooms.
- 🧅 It’s time to start your summer garden. Consult the official planting calendar from Portland Nursery. Fun fact: It’s always the right time to plant herbs, including oregano, parsley, rosemary, and sage.
- 🛞 Do you have studded tires on your car for winter snow adventures? 🏂🎿 March 31 is the deadline for taking them off for the summer months.
Prepare for Summer ☀️⛺
- Book your summer camping spots at state parks now. Don't wait till the nice weather, because they’ll be gone by then.
