Molly Notarianni, the former executive director of Oregon's Farmers Market Fund, talked to the City Cast Portland podcast today about our local farmers markets. (If the last name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s the sister of City Cast Portland lead producer John Notarianni.) Here are some of her favorite local vendors, at various market locations.
Hollywood
“This is just too Portland. There's a vendor called Squirrel and Crow that makes soy-free tempe. It's just so good. It's fantastic. It's like a different taste and a texture. It's made of millet and chickpeas. You gotta do it.”
Woodstock
Alleamin. “It's Somali hot food, and they make these things called sambusas. They're kind of like a samosa, but they have like dal inside of them. And there's this spicy, spicy hot sauce that you dip them in. They are just the best breakfast.”
Dragonfly Forge. “You just go to the market, you bring your knives. He was a samurai who was on some reality TV show about making knives and he just sharpens them at the market.”
St. Johns
“Solstice Flower Works is a no-till flower farm, and they grow these beautiful otherworldly flowers and then make these fantastic bouquets. And so it's an agricultural product that isn't food that I think is so fun.”
Beaverton/Montavilla
Kulfi PDX. “It's an Indian popsicle. They come in these wonderful flavors. There's pistachio and roses and then local fruits, and so that's a great treat. 10 out of 10.”
