‘Tis this season for best-of-2023 lists, and that means a ton of good suggestions for where to dine out — along with, yes, some missed opportunities.
The New York Times’s Best Restaurant Dishes of 2023
Portland makes an appearance on a New York Times list of the 23 best restaurant dishes from across the country. Clandestino’s grilled whole dorado gets a shoutout as a “brilliantly executed — and rarely found — dish.”
- Related: Alas, Clandestino is no more — at least for now. Chef Lauro Romero is now part of the team at the Portland Ritz-Carlton’s Bellpine, which opened last month.
Eater’s 12 Best New Restaurants
Portland also won a spot last month on Eater’s list of the 12 best new U.S. restaurants of 2023. Astral, which is a “not quite a popup and not quite a restaurant,” has a location at Duality Brewing and offers “intricate Mexican plates.” [Eater]
Eater Portland’s Best New Restaurant Awards
Eater Portland gives the best new restaurant nod to Xiao Ye — awarding Astral an honor in the pop-up/chef residency category. Frybaby wins best new food cart, and The Houston Blacklight is the best new bar. [Eater Portland]
Oregonian’s Top 10 Favorites
The Oregonian is slowly rolling out its picks for 2023. No. 10 is Heavenly Creatures, a wine shop and bar. Restaurant critic Michael Russell recommends ordering the young yellowtail toast and the potato chips with whipped camembert. (I’m sold on trying it out soon.) [Oregonian]
