Your Daily Guide

Good morning. Over the past two weeks, we've welcomed so many new Neighbors into our community, and we’re so grateful for the support. Seeing so many of you show up for this work reminds us exactly why we do what we do.

If you haven't joined yet, today is the day. We're here because we believe this city is worth showing up for — worth understanding, worth celebrating, worth investing in. And we can only keep doing this work if you are willing to support it.

Show some neighborly love. Become a City Cast Portland Neighbor.

Don't wait. Today is also your last chance to get the Oxford Pennant — a custom American-made wool felt pennant designed specifically for people who love this city.

What Portland's Talking About

Travel Scandal Topples Housing CEO, Mayor Wilson Warns Against Officer Mask Ban, and Mailbag!

Home Forward CEO Resigns

After disclosures about her extensive travel on the taxpayer dime amid turmoil at Portland’s housing authority, Ivory Mathews has resigned. She will receive a severance payment from Home Forward that includes six months’ pay ($171,424.80) as well as up to $50,000 in services to help her find a new job. Willamette Week’s Sophie Peel joined the podcast to talk about her reporting. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

City Council Approves Street Utility Fee

After years of controversy over how to improve Portland streets, City Council voted (9-to-3) for a transportation utility fee, which goes into effect in January. Only Councilors Dan Ryan, Loretta Smith, and Eric Zimmerman voted against it. [Portland Mercury]

  • How it’ll work: Typical single-family homes will have a $12 monthly charge on utility bills, while most apartments or condo units will pay $8.40. Businesses are expected to pay a fee amounting to 4.3% of their utility bill. [KGW]

Portland Fire Starts Playing

Portland now has a professional women’s basketball team. And they play for the first time on their home court at the Moda Center this Sunday — a pre-season game against the Los Angeles Sparks. Tickets are still available. [WNBA]

Where Is It?

The word “Portland” with a pink mountain like form with people riding bikes, a bridge and house.

Last week’s scavenger hunt was for a mural on a private fence.

“This is on the side of the corner house at SE 29th & Pine St!” wrote reader Danielle S. “It's in a little cul-de-sac near Ken's Artisan Pizza.”

“I walk by there all the time and think it’s such a cute hidden gem,” wrote reader Mary T.

A shoutout to those two readers as well as Philip H., for identifying the spot.

This week’s scavenger hunt is from reader (and regular scavenger hunt contributor) Stephan Vertal:

Metal sculpture that looks like a model of a molecule but in place of some atoms are a house, a coffee cup, a milk carton, and school.

Do you know this mural?

Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll reveal the answer and shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly.
