| | | Sunrise Elementary Is the Latest School With a New Name | Jason Lee Elementary’s namesake was a missionary who sought to convert Oregon's Indigenous people to Christianity (he also founded the city of Salem). But after a process begun in 2024, the school community chose Sunrise Elementary as being more in line with their values. [Willamette Week] | - Why not a better person? Initially the community wanted to pick an Indigenous contemporary of Jason Lee to honor. But after learning that places weren’t named after people in Indigenous tradition, they selected Sunrise. “We’re literally one of PPS’s easternmost schools, but we’re also a school and a neighborhood that’s growing, blossoming and ready to take on a new day,” says Gabrielle Haber, a parent at the school. [Willamette Week]
- Other recent changes: Two high schools — now called Leodis V. McDaniel and Ida B. Wells-Barnett — were renamed back in 2021. Custer Park — which carried the placeholder name A Park for six years — is now ‘Scht Wiwnu Park as of this year. [Oregonian / Willamette Week]
- Changes to come: Cesar Chavez Boulevard — as well as Cesar Chavez School — may eventually see a change. [OPB]

| What Portland's Talking About |
| Portland WNBA Team Wins Second Home Game | The first home game of the season sold out, though the Portland Fire came up short in that game. Now the team — who only had six weeks of practice time before opening their first season — has beaten the New York Liberty, a top team in the league. [OPB] | | 41% of Portlanders Considering Moving Away | In a recent poll, 41% of Portland residents say they’re considering moving out away from the Portland metro area. More than half of them said taxes were one of their top-two reasons. [City Cast Portland 🎧] | | This Strip Club Helped Bring Down a Cabinet Secretary | U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned from her post after an investigation began into her use of public money for travel expenses — including a visit with her staff to a Southeast Foster Road strip club. Willamette Week’s Marty Smith paid a visit and found a club that included more than one pregnant dancer and no possibility that Chavez-DeRemer was there for a “genteel gentleman’s club” experience. (Also hear that Grasso & Blutos did this but I went to Lardo since I heard about it.)” — Irisa P.
- “Rubinette Produce: outside of the farmers markets, they have the BEST produce in the city!” — Sherri B.
- “Shout out to Prost! on Mississippi. They just celebrated 16 years, and it's been a cornerstone of my time in Portland, from World Cup matches to kickball team season-ending parties. They do one thing and do it well.” — Stephen S.
