| Get Your Thrift On This Summer | Curated second-hand clothing and furniture stores are a Portland staple — just like coffee shops and bars, every neighborhood hub has at least a couple. But the line between thrift and more expensive vintage shops has blurred over the last decade as second-hand clothing has gotten trendier — I've found most local shops have a bit of both and everything in between. Here are a few suggestions for places to check out for your next best haul. | - Incoming: Last week, it was announced that one of the founding members of Portland's largest vintage mall, Memory Den, will be opening a new thrifting location downtown this summer. Retropolitan will be filling the former Paul Mitchell School on Southwest Broadway with more than 70 vintage vendors. [Oregonian]
- Some favorites: The viral thrift shop Shirtzenpantz opened its third location, also downtown, this month. Known for its quirky discounts, this is the place for unexpected clothing deals. William Temple House Thrift Store in Northwest is how I furnished my first apartment in Portland — and your dollars go towards low-cost counseling and free food for Portlanders in need. Red Fox Vintage in Woodstock is an easy place to kill a sweaty (or gloomy) summer afternoon — I've found some serious vintage pieces here at reasonable prices. If you're up for a drive, Red White & Blue Thrift Store in Gladstone has it all. Tip: bring cash to avoid ATM fees.
- Related: Recently, a Portland teenager found a Los Angeles Lakers warm-up jersey worn by Wilt Chamberlain at a local Goodwill Outlet. The jacket cost just over three dollars but is expected to sell at auction for up to a quarter of a million dollars. The Goodwill bins are notoriously competitive places to thrift for reasons like this. Tip: If you go, bring gloves. [Willamette Week]

| What Portland's Talking About |
| Tick Hunting in Multnomah County | During this time of year, Multnomah County researchers periodically hunt for ticks to prevent the spread of diseases. Anecdotally, county officials say they're seeing Portland tick populations growing, but that the pests still "don't typically carry Lyme disease." Warm, dry temperatures (like we had last week) are also helpful in curbing ticks. [Oregonian] | | Thorns FC Star Leads Local Venezuela Relief Efforts | Portland Thorns forward Deyna Castellanos jumped into action after last week's devastating earthquake in Venezuela, using her millions of social media followers to share emergency information, reconnect family members, and organize relief efforts. A Venezuelan native and captain of the country's national team, Castellanos hosted a one-day donation drive in Portland this past weekend and has links to additional support options on her Instagram. | Backyard blackberries. (John Notarianni / City Cast Portland) |
| Every Portlander knows how much of a nuisance wild blackberry bramble can be. Although prickly and seemingly impossible to get rid of, they're still delicious. A recent Reddit post by a local reminded me they're starting to ripen, so get snackin'! |
