| | Vote-by-Mail Court Victory | In a 5-to-4 decision this week, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the state of Mississippi to continue counting ballots that are postmarked by Election Day, but received after that date. It was a closely watched case in Oregon and 13 other states that have a grace period for ballots arriving via mail. [Willamette Week] | - Trump reaction: It was something of a surprise decision, given this court’s earlier decision to dismantle the protections of the Voting Rights Act. The President called the decision a “tremendous loss.” [The Guardian]
- Oregon reaction: Gov. Tina Kotek celebrated the high court’s decision: “President Trump has been denied this attempt to try to silence voters.” [KOIN]

[Oregonian] | | Sunstone Way Faces a Criminal Investigation | Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez, along with the county sheriff’s office, confirm they are pursuing a criminal investigation into the management of nonprofit Sunstone Way, which ceased operations yesterday. 🥤A spot of history: Pepsi’s smallest bottling company has a claim to being the oldest business in Oregon. The Van Dusens family opened up a mercantile store in Astoria in 1849. They switched to insurance and later bottling, but have been operating ever since. | | Also in the running for oldest business in the state are Willamette University (if you consider that a business) and the Oregonian newspaper (if you want a business that continued with the same product). |
