🏡 Restaurants in Home Kitchen

Oregon’s laws allow for aspiring chefs to prepare — and sell — many of their favorite dishes from their home kitchen. That’s particularly true for baked goods. And some Portland restaurants have even gotten their start that way: Jerry Benedetto, who opened Jerry’s Tavern, first developed a loyal following for his deep-dish Chicago-style pizza that he offered on Instagram. But there are still restaurants run out of people’s homes. Food reporter Brooke Jackson-Glidden shared some of the ones she’s enjoyed on the podcast today. [Eater Portland / City Cast Portland]

• Carmack’s (Thursday - Sunday): This one’s a doughnut shop run out of a home near Peninsula Park by Sean Carmack, using a potato-based family recipe. Jackson-Glidden particularly recommends the black walnut and the rose flavors. [Eater Portland / City Cast Portland 🎧]
• Maíz Con Raíz (weekends): You can find excellent Mexican cuisine at this Beaverton home. (You text to order.) This home chef makes everything from scratch, including the tortillas. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
• Tommy Lasagna/Lasagna Project (Wednesday - Friday): It’s a COVID holdover, and a favorite of Jackson-Glidden’s. Tom Boyce has impressive restaurant credentials after working in Los Angeles hot spots like Spago and the LA location of Pok Pok. He sells lasagnas and more via Instagram. “These lasagnas are super seasonal and gorgeous,” says Jackson-Glidden. There’s a mini-sized option if you’re ordering just for yourself. Unproven Supplement Offered to Firefighters

Firefighters potentially exposed to toxic smoke while at some of the biggest fires in the West have been offered a supplement that’s not proven to be safe or effective. A group of naturopaths called The Integrative Health Action Network was on the scene of the Spokane fires, as they were during the Los Angeles County fires in January 2025. Some California firefighters insist glutathione has been helpful after smoke exposure, but researchers say that it needs rigorous study before the supplement should be offered. And there are also examples of glutathione containing contaminants that can make matters worse. [OPB]

The Primary Fight That Keeps Going

The democratic socialist Myrna Muñoz beat incumbent State. Rep. Janeen Sollman in this spring's Democratic primary, but she appears to be continuing her fight with Sollman. Muñoz defended a man arrested on misdemeanor charges for harassing Sollman. And an account with the name “Myrna Munoz” gave $100 to the man's legal defense, though Munoz and her campaign didn’t respond to Willamette Week's request to confirm it’s her. [Willamette Week]

Is the Trail Blazers’ Owner ‘Running Out the Clock’?

At first, the Trail Blazers pushed for quick negotiations over the Moda Center renovations. Now they have largely disappeared, even as the city tries to work out a deal, according to the Oregonian’s interviews and public documents. Team owner Tom Dundon is also staying away from the team's direct negotiations with the city, even though he’s the only one who has the power to authorize a deal. [Oregonian]
