Your Daily Guide

Happy Friday!

If you’re opening the newsletter today, you’re probably wondering what remarkable event is happening in Portland this weekend. Or maybe you’re here for our Friday scavenger hunt.

Before we get to those (and the news of the day), I’m asking all of you to support our newsletter by joining City Cast Neighbors at $10 a month — or $100 a year — because the newsletter helps make sense of what’s going on in Portland and brings some fun white doing it.

Become a Neighbor

This weekend, ADX Fest — a month-long festival to celebrate the crafty, arty creators of Portland — kicks off. There’s also the Portland Greek Festival (now in its 73rd year) — along with the last weekend of Clownfest, which some of you might rather flee than attend 🤡 (But if that’s your thing, there’s also a clown rave this weekend.)

Plus, check out the opening of “Streamers,” an exhibit of photographer Rian Dundon’s look at citizen journalists behind the camera at protests.

What Portland's Talking About

An Old Town–Based Women’s Outdoor Club

A new group called the Women’s Outdoor Club, started in mid-June by the owner of the Old Town outdoor shop Landdd, has been an unexpected success; it now has 850 members and hosts multiple events a week. “It’s a sanctuary,” founder Lillian Hardy says. “I want to protect it and make sure all the girls are having an authentic experience.” [Willamette Week]

Fall Flu and COVID Shots Recommended

Oregon health officials say that we could once again be facing a severe flu season. They’re reminding folks to get this year’s vaccines against COVID and flu. The recommendation comes as Oregon is also facing a measles outbreak – with 58 cases so far this year. (Vaccines are also effective against measles.) [OPB]

Celebrating Bars After Some Key Closures

Portland bars have come together to throw an event called Barmageddon to bring attention to Portland’s bar scene — Oct. 4 - 7. The aim is to get people out to the bars, and it’s named for Oregonian restaurant critic Michael Russell’s story on the many bar closures lately that played on the term “Armageddon.” [Oregonian / City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

“Gosh, I took this same picture yesterday!” wrote reader Audrianna Gurr. “Across from the Schnitz on the Park Blocks! I park my car here for events nearby.”

“It’s called ‘the Star Catcher’ and was painted by a Russian artist,” wrote reader Carol Herzog. “The mural is very large and covers the whole side of the building. It’s in the South Park Blocks.”

“Right near the Portland Museum of Art, downtown — this was the first captivating piece of art I saw on my way to my first visit to Portland’s Museum of Art for my partner’s birthday,” wrote reader Robyn Cullen. “All I know is even if I hadn’t gotten into the museum that day, my heart would have been full just seeing this enormous, sweet, magical piece of art. I just love living here. 💕”

A shoutout to all of them and other readers who identified the location — Tim C., Carolyn Ullman, Spoon, Chris H., Will Nye, and Generalist Jane!

“The Star Catcher” last appeared as a scavenger hunt in a December 2022 newsletter. Almost four years later, we decided it was time to feature the captivating mural again. A special shoutout to Nanci Courtney, who knew the location back then and wrote in again. Thanks for being a dedicated reader of the newsletter!

This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Mary Pags:

Do you know where this exhibit is?

Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll reveal the answer and shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly.

Where Is It?

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
