Hey Portland,

🎨 Have you seen the one-of-a-kind neighborhood map local artist Amy Wike designed with us?

Map of Portland with images of iconic spots: the Oaks Park roller coaster, the Portland Pickle, Powell Butte, a banana slug, the Mt. Tabor reservoir and more.

You seriously need this on your wall.

These maps are so beautiful and quirky, and feature icons like the St. Johns Bridge and Dillon T. Pickle. But to snag a print before they’re gone, you need to become a City Cast Neighbor! It just takes a couple of minutes, and comes with handy benefits that make connecting with Portland even easier.

The Best Fall Foods in Portland

I am extremely serious about my autumnal delights. Before December starts, I must attend at least one harvest festival near Salem (Bauman's Farm, typically), pick some apples at a Hood River orchard (Kiyokawa Family Orchards, ideally), tromp through a Sauvie Island pumpkin patch (Bella Organic Farm, naturally), and watch a horror movie at an independent Portland movie theater (Hollywood or Clinton, especially).

Similarly, I’ll work through a checklist of seasonal produce and desserts: slices of pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes, hot apple cider, apple cider doughnuts. So now that we are indisputably in the heart of autumn, I thought I’d share some of my favorite fall treats I’ve encountered so far this year, organized by core ingredients:

🍎 Apple

Let’s start with beverages. Pip’s Original is primarily known for its doughnuts, but the chai is a main draw — those folks know their way around a spice rack. The spicy caramel cider also has a nice balance of sweetness and warm heat, thanks to owner Nate Snell’s vanilla ghost pepper syrup, which he created in 2013 as a secret menu item.

Since the planet is slowly boiling and it’s still weirdly hot around here, the apple cider slushy at Sugarpine Drive-In is a nice alternative, with a hearty dose of ginger, allspice, and nutmeg. Sugarpine has a whole Kiyokawa apple–themed menu this month overflowing with bangers: an apple sundae with hazelnut streusel and apples steeped in spiced beet syrup (which adds a nice earthy note), a cider-braised smoked pork sandwich with apple-cabbage slaw and apple mostarda, and an apple-loaded Hokkaido-style curry soup with smoked mushrooms and fukujinzuke, a Japanese pickle relish.

For classic apple cider doughnuts outside the orchard, Milk Glass Mrkt sells some killer ones on Fridays.

💛 Chanterelle

It’s not just about the sweets for me — we’re in the heart of chanterelle mushroom season, baby. They’re the star of a zippy tagliatelle at Cafe Olli with corn and shallots, and a pizza at Lovely’s Fifty Fifty with shaved spring onions and gremolata. And as soon as I finish this newsletter, I’m going to find my own out in Tillamook State Forest. Wish me luck!

What Portland's Talking About

Nike Will Restructure, Lay Off Employees

Nike’s financial woes are only getting worse, it seems. Following a Thursday earnings report noting $11.2 billion in quarterly sales ($100 million lower than projections), the company’s stock price fell 8% in two hours, leaving them at a 13-year low. The restructuring plan is expected to produce $2.5 billion in savings, but Nike is unclear how many jobs the company will have to cut. Layoffs will begin in 2027. [Oregonian]

Trail Blazers Fires New Announcer Over Past Tweets

In the course of a single Thursday, the Portland Trail Blazers announced, apologized for, and fired the team’s new play-by-play announcer, Braiden Bell. After the Blazers unveiled the new announcer, KGW reporter Devon Haskins dug up racist and misogynistic tweets posted on Bell’s account in 2012 and 2013. In a statement to KGW, the Trail Blazers expressed regret over their choice, and told the TV station that they will not be moving forward with Bell’s hire. [KGW]

Portland Metro Chamber President Sues City Over Arts Tax Bump

Portland Metro Chamber President Andrew Hoan is not happy about the latest increase to the city’s art tax. In May, Portland City Council approved a 43% increase of the Arts Education and Access Tax (the increase also exempts around 40 percent of low-income Portland tax filers). Hoan thinks that hike should have been brought to the city’s voters. Willamette Week reporter Sophie Peel gave City Cast Portland host Claudia Meza the details on today’s episode.
