Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Portland! Every October, a part of St. Helens transforms into the 1998 Disney movie's "Halloweentown," which was filmed there. This weekend I visited Spirit of Halloweentown for the first time and really enjoyed it. There's no admission fee to enjoy the town square and take pictures with some of the movie props β€” you only have to pay to enjoy the attractions (which I didn't do). It's a real family-friendly event, and the drive from Portland is quite nice. Alternatively, if you're looking for something truly scary to embrace the holiday season, Portland Monthly has a list of haunted houses to visit.

Today's Must-Know

Portland Trail Blazers' Future Still Uncertain As They Kick Off New Season

Over the past year, the Portland Trail Blazers have been a major focal point in city politics: Local leaders gave hot takes on the ongoing Moda Center renovation deal negotiations, while rumors circulated about whether new owner Tom Dundon might pull the team out of Portland entirely. Today is their season opener at the Moda Center β€” here's the latest Blazers news.

  • Will they stay?: Last week, owner Tom Dundon confirmed in a text to The Athletic that keeping the Trail Blazers in Portland "is the priority" β€” and said that claims he has discussed relocating the team with NBA officials are "inaccurate." Anonymous sources say talks have happened in private. [The Athletic]
  • Dundon's few fans: A poll conducted by DHM Research last month shows just 7% of Oregon respondents have a positive impression of Dundon. Since becoming owner, Dundon has pushed for a taxpayer-funded $600 million renovation of the city-owned Moda Center and laid off dozens of Trail Blazers employees. [Oregonian]
  • Dame is back: After sitting out all of last season with a torn Achilles, Blazers star point guard Damian Lillard is back β€” but plans to play fewer minutes on the court to manage his recovery. Lillard made clear this week that the precautions are to preserve his longevity as a player and that he's "not an old man". [Blazer's Edge]
  • Get your tickets: The game is at 7 p.m. at the Moda Center against the Phoenix Suns, and tickets are as low as $30. Consider taking the MAX or the bus to avoid parking fees (and some gnarly traffic). [Ticketmaster / trimet.org]

Standing Up for a Safer Portland

D’Amore Law Group believes personal injury law is about more than settlement checks β€” it's about advancing public safety. When powerful companies and institutions fail to keep people safe, the harm doesn't stop with those directly affected; it reverberates through the entire community. Led by veteran trial attorney Tom D'Amore, the firm holds negligent parties and corporations accountable, driving real change to make Portland safer for all.

What Portland's Talking About

More Human Remains Discovered Downtown

This week, more human remains were found at a homeless encampment in downtown Portland, following a similar discovery near a different encampment last week β€” police say the two incidents might be linked. Police spokesperson Mike Benner said the incident last week was "incredibly troubling" but that there is no indication yet that "someone is going around our city committing violent acts." The homicide unit is currently investigating the findings. [Oregonian]

Hundreds of City Workers Head Towards a Strike

More than 800 Portland city workers could strike as soon as Nov. 1 after ten months of negotiations over wages and layoff protections. Almost all of the City of Portland Professional Workers Union (CPPW) voted to authorize a strike; meanwhile, members of Portland City Laborers (represented by LiUNA Local 483) could soon vote to strike as well. If authorized, an additional 750 frontline workers responsible for city maintenance could strike by the end of December β€” their last strike was in Feb. 2023. [OPB]

How To Feel At Home in Portland If You Just Moved Here
