Today's Must-Know

An outline of Oregon with coloring book images of a long cabin by a river with pine trees on the bank; a lighthouse, clouds, a sun behind Mt. Hood, and the Steel Bridge. Words read: I Voted.

Legislators, Judges, and Soil District Reps on the Ballot

I follow local news closely, but when I open my ballot, I still have homework to do before I cast my votes — particularly for races like Multnomah County Circuit Court judges and the East County soil districts. So today here are some resources for all of us to consult as we cast our ballots:

Voter Pamphlet: Every election, the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office sends us all a hefty resource. It might seem like homework to go through, but this is an open book test. You can still find it electronically if you’ve tossed yours: Here’s Multnomah County’s 64-page guide for state races. (If you live in another county, find yours here.) But you can also use it for local races — judges are pages 59 - 61.

While your paper guide arrives in one booklet, the local races are in another guide, which you can also find online — soil districts, for example, are on pages M71 - M76.

Newspaper endorsements: It’s always interesting to hear arguments made by editorial boards for the candidates and positions they endorse — whether you agree with them or not.

Election guides: As a public broadcaster, OPB can’t make endorsements, but they offer a guide to some of the races.

Reminder: Yesterday’s newsletter rounded up all the City Cast Portland podcast interviews we’ve done as part of our election coverage.

What Portland's Talking About

Oregon’s Worst Wildfire Season

A record-low winter snowpack and two lightning storms this summer led to an especially destructive fire season: 2.1 million acres burned in Oregon this year; it was also the most expensive firefighting season, passing the records previously set in 2024. Tragically, this year’s fires were also deadly — with two people killed as they worked to fight the fires in Oregon. [OPB]

High-Paid Blue Collar Jobs

There are five blue collar jobs where average pay is better than certain white collar professions (like accountants and some teachers): Electricians, powerline installers, pipefitters, sheet metal workers, and heavy equipment operators. Oregon's construction industry is going through a downturn, but plenty of high-skilled work remains in high demand. Plus, many workers in some of the fields are approaching retirement. [Oregonian]

One of Downtown Portland’s Biggest Backers

Big Pink owner Jeff Swickard has become one of downtown’s biggest boosters. Some hope he’ll even persuade Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon to work out a deal with the city to keep the team here. Swickard, who made his fortune owning car dealerships, is also making generous political contributions. Oregonian reporter Jonathan Bach joined the show to share what he’s learned about Swickard.
