Your Daily Guide

Good morning! Happy Halloween — almost! This week’s your last shot for the Haunted Corn Maze, Spirit of Halloweentown, and similar festivities. On Saturday, check out the Portland Erotic Ball — or the Portland Mercury’s after-party, Scream Queen Dance Party.

As last Sunday’s Weekly Wander newsletter reminded us, there are also Día de los Muertos celebrations — with Catrinas en la Calle on Saturday downtown.

What Portland's Talking About

City Workers Set Nov. 9 Strike Date

The 800 city workers represented by City of Portland Professional Workers Union have announced a date they plan to strike — Nov. 9. In all, 93% of their union members had previously voted to strike, and it comes as the union has asked for 7% wage increases over the course of two years. [CPPW Press Release]

The Best and Worst Election Mailers

Willamette Week has picked the most striking election mailers — the candidates with the most firefighters, the cutest baby, and the notable appearance by an old white guy. Maybe you tossed these in the recycling as they arrived, but the junk mail has been transformed into an enjoyable read. [Willamette Week]

Half a Dozen Key Statehouse Races

None of the most competitive races for Oregon Legislature are in Portland, but political observers are watching some key races that will determine the future of Democrats’ supermajority in Salem. A supermajority allows the Democrats to pass new taxes without Republican support. Tuesday’s results could pad their supermajority — or lose that power. [OPB]

Where Is It?

The Strong Empowerment Village, an affordable housing community on North Williams Street and North Alberta Avenue, opened earlier this year, is home to this mural by Kathy Pennington. Pennington is a local artist and longtime Albina neighborhood resident, whose work often documents the life of Black Portlanders.

A shoutout to readers Be B., Fran, and Schuff for identifying the location.

This week’s scavenger hunt is from reader Kim Streuli:

Tree with a trunk that runs along the ground and then forms and arch in front of a white house with green shutters

An unusual trunk. (Kim Streuli / reader submission)

We're taking a break from murals this week and highlighting this unusual tree. Have you spotted it?

Please click here to submit the location — and, for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll reveal the answer and shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly.

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
