Side Quest: Sweat It Out

A floating sauna called Ebb & Ember is moored to a dock on the Columbia River beneath a cloudy sky.

Sauna — it’s so hot right now. The health and wellness practice rooted in Scandinavian culture is gaining momentum in the Pacific Northwest, as increasing numbers of people seek out the physical and mental benefits of the thermal cycle.

In the Portland area alone, you can find a variety of sauna experiences to try, from the infrared sauna at Shiver & Sweat or the Russian banya steam bath of Forest Haven Sauna. And in February, 20 different saunas gathered for the first-ever Willamette Sauna Festivaali.

Here are a few for your sauna bucket list.

Guss Mobile Sauna: Usually found in Sellwood Riverfront Park, this mobile sauna — which partners with Human Access Project — sometimes crosses the river to Willamette Park. Either location is ideal for a dip and friendly conversation with your fellow bathers. Keep an eye out for summer plans.

Ebb & Ember: Docked in the Elevated Tides Marina, this floating sauna relaxes you with the sounds of the Columbia River flowing beneath your feet and a pleasant heat that radiates off the stove. When you’re ready to cool off, head to the upper deck — there’s even a spot to plunge into the water if you’re brave enough.

Secret Sauna: This setup tucked behind Replicant in Montavilla just wrapped its first season. Following a summer hiatus and move to a new location, this hush-hush hangout will reopen just in time for hygge season. Stay tuned for its new home this fall.
