With Powell Boulevard to its north and the Willamette River to its west, Brooklyn is an often overlooked pocket of Southeast Portland. It's one of the few neighborhoods in the city with an island — Ross Island. But it also has no public river access.
With the TriMet Orange Line running right through the heart of the neighborhood and bordered by McLoughlin and Powell boulevards, residents are just a quick bus, car, or bike ride from many of Portland’s buzziest areas.
But don't sleep on Brooklyn. It's home to one of the city's oldest theaters, a museum-quality home, and unique eats ranging from Texas-style barbecue to real-deal diner food, and even authentic German cuisine.

Botto's BBQ's cheesy brisket hash (top left corner) and spicy baked mac-and-cheese (center) never disappoint. Also pictured: House-brined pickled veggies and a smoked kielbasa with their orange Texas sauce. (Bryan M. Vance / City Cast)
Something to Eat: Botto’s BBQ
With its massive wood smoker out back, this red building is one of the best spots in Portland for authentic Texas-style smoked meats. A regular special, always order a side of the cheesy brisket hash if they have it. Trust me.
Something to Do: The Aladdin Theater
Dating back to 1924, The Aladdin has lived many lives. With stints as a playhouse, movie theater, and adult movie theater, since the 1990s the Aladdin has served as one of Portland's premier concert and comedy venues.
Something to Do or Eat: Edelweiss Sausage & Delicatessen
Stepping into Edelweiss is like popping into a real European deli. A full market, with hard-to-find European foods, the pros know you go to Edelweiss for handmade sausages and other cured and smoked meats. Order freshly cooked sausage to snack on while you shop.
