Arnold Creek is a Portland neighborhood that you may never have heard of — maybe because it’s just barely inside city limits in Southwest. It’s a little like the suburbs — or the more rural parts of the region. “ I feel like I live in the woods,” says KBOO news director and resident Althea Billings. “Of course, it's still Portland. You're 15 minutes from stuff.”

Billings talked to the City Cast Portland podcast about why she likes living there and some places she recommends.

The Portland Neighborhood That Feels Like Living in the Forest

00:00:00

🌲 In the Neighborhood:

It’s a corner store that specializes in having an extraordinary selection of beer (just check out their social media if you need proof). They also have an equivalent variety of soda — four flavors of Fanta and unusual Canada Dry flavors, for example.

It’s a new Middle Eastern restaurant in the neighborhood. Don’t skip the baklava.

It’s a beautiful state park. Warning: It’s about to be hit by $10 parking fees that are part of the state’s efforts to deal with a budget crunch.

The cozy sports bar is a gathering spot for neighborhood residents. Notably: It’s always got women’s sports on at least one screen.

🌇 Nearby:

It’s a good place to go watch the sunset, just across the city boundary into Lake Oswego.

Adjacent to Tryon Creek is an actual farm. They’ve got an upcoming apple festival Sept. 21.

It’s truly the original one, and a great place to grab breakfast. Tip: Weekends can be crowded, so weekdays are a great time to go.
